Thomas Edison Started Working At Age Twelve
Written By: Gary Wonning
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio and grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the seventh and last child of Nancy and Samuel Ogden Edison.
Edison’s family moved to Port Huron after the railroad bypassed Milan in 1854 and business declined. Beginning as early as age twelve, Edison sold candy and newspapers on trains running from Port Huron to Detroit and sold vegetables to supplement his income.
Edison obtained the exclusive right to sell newspapers on the road, and, with the aid of four assistants, he set in type and printed the Grand Trunk Herald, which he sold with his other papers. This began Edison‘s long streak of entrepreneurial ventures, as he discovered his talents as a businessman.

Thomas Edison, like many other successful people, began his working career at a very early age. He began at an age many would consider a child today and too young to work. In reality, in today’s world, if something of this nature would become known, child protective services would be called and not only would he be made to stop, but the parents would be prosecuted as well.
In this day and age, many kids his age roam freely and have nothing to do, thereby they get into all kinds of trouble, not having an outlet for their creativity.
