The love we have for each other is the greatest threat to those who rule over us. If those who rule over us want to stay in power, then they must destroy our ability to love each other in a healthy sort of way.

If Amos Wilson, author of the books, The Falsification of Afrikan Consciousness, Black on Black Violence: The Psychodynamics of Black Self-Annihilation in Service of White Domination, and Awakening the Natural Genius of Black Children would be greatly disappointed if he knew the depth of self-hatred in Black music today.

When I was growing up, C. Dolores Tucker, a civil rights activist and politician used to appear on the controversial Phil Donohue talk show warning young Black people about the dangers of gangsta rap music and the use of the N word. Many of us ignored her warnings and wrote her off as crazy because she was an older Black woman who seemed to be completely out of touch with young Black people and our music.

However, Mrs. Tucker was right.

There are no other people on the planet other than Black Americans who use a word that devalues and subjugates us and our culture. And if we can’t be honest to ourselves about the depth of self-hate associated with such a word, then our communities or people will never be able to heal from systemic oppression and racism.
