My first display!

That has to be the highlight of my day today — being allowed to put my own display of books out! I was working with S*, the supervisor, and as soon as she said she wanted to change the display, I asked if I could do one on dogs, as Crufts is on this weekend… and she agreed! Well, it only took minutes for me to find 12 or so books about dogs or with dogs in the story or in the title, and a bit longer to create the poster (black and white when printed, but still…). It’s not a wonderfully creative, eye-catching display, but given what’s already there, I didn’t want to overdo it on my first attempt.

Again, not many in, apart from the regulars… the Brian Cox-lookalike dad and his quite intense son, who was looking for a ‘Perfect School’ Goosebumps book, but we discovered it’s only on DVD; Mr Muse, who reads the paper all afternoon and has to be almost pushed out of the door when we close; another man who came and did some photocopying, opened all the windows, and then didn’t close them (good thing he did, because he was a bit smelly… and talks to himself); a couple of kids, a couple of older ladies.

I also tried to get to grips with the kids’ first reading books. These are divided into ‘Early Readers’, ‘Orchard’, ‘Ladybird’, ‘Tiddlers’, ‘Tadpoles’, Usborne ‘First Readers’, ‘Hopscotch’, and so on. Within each, there can be different levels too, but not all. Some roughly correspond to various levels that school books use. I don’t know who this is useful for, but it seems overly complicated for the average mother. And this is a very important time, when kids are just learning to read! I’m sure the content of all these books is great, but who is going to bother if they aren’t aware if a book is the wrong level and too easy or too difficult. I did find some useful information about the Usborne Pirates book, which I’ll pass on to Jemma for Islay, perhaps, where one page is for the parent to read, and the other has a word or words for the child to read.
