My Experience as a Liberty Mutual TechStart Intern (2024 Edition)
This past summer, I returned to Liberty Mutual Insurance as a full-stack software engineer intern in the TechStart program. TechStart is Liberty Mutual’s internship and early career program for students interested in technology oriented roles, such as software engineering, DevOps, data science, and cybersecurity.
Last year, I worked on a team of five interns to develop a web application to manage users in DocuSign. This year, I worked with a development team to improve the auto claims management experience for Liberty Mutual customers. Throughout my internship, I refined my knowledge of languages, frameworks, and tools. This includes React, TypeScript, JavaScript, GraphQL, AWS, Docker, Splunk, and Datadog.
My team owns multiple applications, and I had the opportunity to build solutions for these applications and launch some of my solutions to production! I also experienced the daily life of a full-time software engineer, which included using dashboards to monitor the state of our applications, resolve issues based on customer feedback, and reviewing pull requests.
One of my favorite parts of my experience was the Liberty Intern Talent Summit, also known as the LIT Summit! As a rising senior, I was invited to spend three days in Boston where I learned more about Liberty Mutual through multiple panels, heard from a number of inspiring speakers, explored the city, and met fellow interns.
I enjoyed listening to words of wisdom from CEO Tim Sweeney, Chief Purpose and DEI Officer Melanie Foley, Doug, Lindsey Pollak, and panel hosts. I also had the chance to tour the Boston office and visit the Prudential Center, which was a wonderful part of the experience! I would recommend future interns to attend the LIT Summit.
I’ve learned a lot over the course of this summer from a number of individuals I met along the way. If I had to pick my favorite lessons learned for future interns, it would be to ask for help, advocate for yourself, and to enjoy the experience.
Ask for Help
When starting on a new team, it can be daunting to figure out applications and issues along the way. I learned that asking for help after troubleshooting potential solutions was not something to be afraid of. Liberty Mutual’s culture encourages individuals to be open and collaborate, and everyone is willing to help you as an intern. As my People Leader (or manager) had mentioned, you don’t know what you don’t know, so don’t worry about asking for help!
Advocate for Yourself
As an intern, I had a few goals that I wanted to accomplish, and I learned it’s important to advocate for the work you’re interested in. I had mentioned to my team that I wanted to explore a new story before I left, and that story gave me the opportunity to work with GraphQL in addition to React and TypeScript, which enriched my experience! Advocating for yourself and your interests gives you the opportunity to explore your interests and make the most of your summer.
Enjoy the Experience
Reflecting on what is likely to be my final internship, I realized how unique and exciting it is to be an intern, particularly at Liberty Mutual. Interns have the opportunity to meet a variety of individuals from a number of backgrounds, immerse themselves in new experiences, and have an impact at a Fortune 100 company. The time I spent has translated into new friends, improved knowledge of software engineering, and a better understanding of Liberty Mutual as an organization.
I’ve enjoyed my past experiences at Liberty Mutual and would highly recommend the TechStart Intern Program!
