One-sided Love as Conditional Probability Part 1

Well .. I am not a good writer, but was in my office one evening and suddenly got this weird idea of correlating the conditional probability with one-sided love. I was thinking about relationships and I got this idea of explaining conditional probability.

It’s a small story of two people meeting for coffee. They speak and instantly like each other. But it is easier said than done. Our protagonist is a guy named Gabrek and our hero’s love interest is Erica. Both have good chemistry, both are well-advanced in their studies and carrier. But Erica wants more in life.

Let’s get started with this and define our events.

A — Gabrek like Erica

B — Erica like Gabrek

By the law of conditional probability

P(B|A) = P(A and B) / P(A)

to put it in a more romantic way

P(Erica like Gabrek|Gabrek like Erica) = P(Gabrek and Erica both love each other) / P(Gabrek like Erica)

P(Erica like Gabrek|Gabrek like Erica) = P(Gabrek like Erica)*P(Erica like Gabrek) / P(Gabrek like Erica)

If you see, the whole term on the right-hand side.

P(both of them together) depends on P(Erica like Gabrek)

That is Erica liking Gabrek, given that Gabrek is a hopelessly-romantic guy.

Let assume P(Erica like Gabrek) is zero or close to zero and the whole idea of Gabrek Erica being together goes for a toss.

P(Erica like Gabrek|Gabrek like Erica) = P(Gabrek like Erica and Gabrek like Erica) / P(Gabrek like Erica)

to put it in a more romantic way

P(Erica like Gabrek|Gabrek like Erica) = P(Gabrek and Erica both love each other) / P(Gabrek like Erica)
