How to become a chartered accountant?

In order to qualify for the post chartered accountant, a person is required to pass three levels of examinations prescribed by ICAI.

Although, a particular person can enroll himself with the ICAI after completing his 10th standard, but he only becomes a suitable candidate for appearing in the first level after clearing his 12th standard or equivalent from a recognized institute. After that the three levels that need to be clear are:

CPT: CPT or Common Proficiency Test includes four subjects namely, accountancy, merchant law, general economics and qualititative aptitude.

IPCC: The second level of chartered accountancy examination is Integrated Professional Competence Course. This level is comprised of two groups:

Group-I: In group one there are four subjects including:

Accounting

Business laws, ethics, and communications

Cost accounting and financial management

Taxation

Group-II: In group II there are mainly three subjects:

Advanced accounting

Auditing and assurance

Information technology and strategic management

After passing either Group I or both the groups of IPCC, an individual can enroll himself as an articled assistant for a period of 3 years in order to practicing chartered accountant.

CA Final Examination: The final level of chartered accountancy examination also consists of two groups;

Group I: In this group there are four subjects namely:

Financial reporting

Strategic financial management

Advanced auditing and professional ethics

Corporate and allied laws

Group II: There are four subjects in this group also;

Advanced Management Accounting

Information Systems Control and Audit

Direct Tax Laws

Indirect Tax Laws

After passing all the three levels and 3 years of practical training, an individual becomes the member of ICAI and designated as Chartered Accountant.

Campus Selection

Every year the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India organize campus placement for recently qualified chartered accountants. This program is usually conducted in various centers across India. Some of the main focal points of this years Feb-March 2015 campus selection are

  • Total 1370 candidates were offered the CA jobs in the campus selection program organized by ICAI.
  • Around 90 organizations including CA firms and other companies participated in this program
  • 8 candidates were offered the highest salary of Rs. 30 Lakhs per year for international posting by Tolaram Group Industries at Banglore and Kolkatta center
  • 2 candidates at New Delhi center were offered the highest chartered accountant salary of Rs. 21.50 lakhs per year for domestic posting by Bharti airtel
  • The average chartered accountant salary offered was Rs. 7.20 lakhs per year
