I was once interrogated about my lack of religious belief by an border guard on arrival at Heathrow. I am an evolutionary biologist (but was entering the UK, where I had once lived, as a tourist). Border guard was of the Islamic persuasion. He asked me if I was a “fan of Mr Darwin?”. Then he asked me if I was “not a God-fearing person then?”. He also asked me if I thought some people were “more evolved than others”. (What???) I wanted to say “none of this has anything to do with border control and is, frankly, none of your business!” and “Where are you going with this? It’s 2009 — evolution is scientific fact” but, remembering that he has ‘all the power’, I just had to smile sweetly and pretend it didn’t feel like persecution.
