Metacognition: Where Else are Wireframes and Storyboards Useful?
The first time we used storyboards at CMU was our first year when we were planning out our video project in freshman studio. By breaking down our story scene by scene, we were able to visualize how we would approach the actual filming process later in the project, but it was also an incredibly useful tool to communicate our ideas to our classmates and professors without going through the lengthy process of filming and editing videos right off the bat. Storyboarding and wire-framing can be incredibly useful in any situation where you need to communicate in shorthand a story or set of complex interactions that take place over time and a digital or physical space. For example, you can use them to diagram the way people navigate to a destination in both physical and digital environments. They can show a basic set of instructions that can be further developed, or communicate a set of possible scenarios.
