The Most Anticipated Movies of 2019
2018 has been a fantastic year in film. From the cultural phenomenon of Black Panther, to the end of our 14 year wait with The Incredibles 2, all the way to the release of the highly anticipated (and awesome) Avengers: Infinity War, 2018 was nothing short of incredible and has shaped up to be a quality year in film. With that said, it’s now time to look ahead to 2019 and what the film industry has in store for us, and let me be the first to say that 2019 is going to be a wild, fun, and emotional ride. On one hand we’re going to see the end of some beloved characters, dramatic trilogies, and long-standing universes. On the other hand, we’re going to be introduced to a few new faces, new stories, and plenty of live action remakes of some of the most beloved animated films. Plenty of movies we’re going to see in 2019 will be highly anticipated sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots- Zombieland 2, John Wick Chapter 3, Dark Phoenix, and The Lion King. Next year is gearing up to be a stellar year in film and it’s time to countdown the 10 most anticipated movies to hit the theaters in 2019.
Now, for those of you who know me, the top 2 movies should not surprise you in the slightest and the remaining 8 on the list should also be relatively expected if you know my taste in movies and what I love to watch.
Like most of my articles, there has to be an honorable mention section. There are just too many films coming out in 2019 and I need to show some love to the outsiders that didn’t make the top 10. Honorable mentions include: Aladdin, Spider-Man: Far From Home, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, Glass, Captain Marvel, Zombieland 2, Hellboy, and Wonder Woman 1984.
10. John Wick 3: Parabellum
John Wick has become a new action icon, and everyone is dying to see more of him on the big screen. John Wick 3 is going to pick up right where John Wick 2 ended with John Wick on the run after killing a high-level crime lord.
The DCEU at this point has been a bit shaky. I’ve been a big fan of it but there’s no denying the movies haven’t been demonstrations of stellar film-making. Aquaman is set to release in December and early reviews are showing signs that the DCEU could be moving in the right direction. Shazam! is also gearing up to help the DCEU take a BIG STRIDE forward. The script has been given high praise and the trailer is showing us that the DCEU might be taking a few pages of the Marvel movie-making handbook.
8. IT: Chapter 2
IT was one of the biggest surprises of 2017 and if that’s any indication of what we should expect from IT: Chapter 2 then we should be in for a treat. Our beloved Losers Club is all grown up now and will have to reunite when a familiar enemy returns to terrorize them.
This Joker film will serve as a separate entity to the greater DCEU and will see Joaquin Phoenix (multiple Oscar nominee) take over as the Clown Prince of Crime.
6. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino has never made a bad film and its been 4 years since we’ve been treated to one of his masterpieces. With his reputation and incredible track record, there is no doubt in my mind that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be another impeccable movie added to Tarantino's resume. Topped off by a great lead 3 in Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will more than likely be another great movie in Quentin Tarantino's already incredible career.
5. Toy Story 4
No surprise here. The Toy Story franchise has been the greatest animated franchise we’ve seen. All three previous films have been nothing short of impeccable works of art, which all culminated to the rightful earning of a Best Picture nomination for Toy Story 3 at the Academy Awards. Guaranteed to make your heart throb and your eyes tear, Toy Story 4 will most likely be the last time we see our beloved friends on the big screen, and its only right (and almost expected) that their exit will come at the end of another fantastic installment to the Toy Story franchise. Some people will argue this film should be higher on this list, which is an acceptable argument, but this is my list and I’m more excited for 4 other films.
4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters
Did you see the trailer? No? Well go watch it, and then you’ll understand why this movie made it to #4 on this list.
3. The Lion King
Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Billy Eichner, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, Beyonce Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones. Do I need to say more? Arguably (BIG ARGUE) the greatest animated film of all-time being remade 25 years later in LIVE ACTION!! AND on top of the stellar cast, we get JON FAVREAU directing it, the man responsible for the 2016 live action The Jungle Book (which is a phenomenal movie)!!
2. Star Wars Episode IX
Surprise surprise, Star Wars Episode IX is one of my top 2 most anticipated films of 2019. Who would’ve ever thought? There’s really not much to say about this film. Not much detail has been given about the plot line and the direction J.J. Abrams plans on taking the franchise. Nevertheless it is Star Wars, it is the last film in this trilogy, we get the whole cast coming back, and everyone should be excited to see the fate of our heroes and villains.
1. Untitled Avengers 4
This is it. This is the big one. It all leads to this. 21 films later and we have finally reached the year of the big one. The largest cinematic universe EVER comes to an end with Avengers 4. Avengers: Infinity War left us heart-broken and in awe and the anticipation to see how our heroes will move forward in their great war with Thanos has been making our skin itch. The questions of ‘who will die?’, ‘will Thanos be defeated?’, ‘will the quantum realm come into play?’, and ‘will we see time-travel?’ have been looming over our heads since the release of Infinity War. So many questions, so few answers. May 2019 cannot come fast enough.
