I am not sure. I’ve joined community style things for SF (a forum) and found it became an echo chamber. More to the point, few people were publishing, most used it as a proxy for publishing work etc I.e. they spent their life talking about science fiction despite their own ambitions.

That’s not meant as a criticism by any means, just an observation. I think many genre specific forums become talking shops.
