It’s not just a piece of paper. It’s a symbolic commitment that you’re going to do what the marriage vows say: for better or worse, blah, blah, blah. I don’t agree that you should make a decision to stay together every day, because there are too many days that you wouldn’t, between the days that you would.
The bigger problem is on the front end, where too many are too immature to get married, in the first place, or the ultra religious do so in order to have sex. (The conservative, religious southern states have a far higher divorce rate.)
