This is something I believe in deeply, as a big-data and analytics engineer. For years, we designed systems which would store massive amounts of records of facts in a database. And we would have these analysts query those databases using their intuition driven clever ideas to gets patterns out of them.

We had to wait for data to become structured and compiled nicely into a data warehouse to start the pattern recognition tasks. That means the computation and analytics happened(in batch mode) a long time after the events represented by the facts took place.

Modern businesses, however, require that the decisions be made sooner, preferably in near-real time!

In recent times, visual recognition is getting better each day due to a variety of reasons (combination of deep nets, GPU horse power, frameworks for anyone to download and play etc..).

It increasingly is looking like there is going to be no need for us to wait for the raw visual data from the world to be translated by human minds, into a facts for loading a DB table….We can take the compute a level up the pipeline, to where the events actually take place!

….We can query the real world directly!
