Why, oh why?
Wish we could know more. Why did JoePa and the other university executives make the decisions they did? What was their motivation? Did they consciously decide to not act, or was their inaction an act of fear for themselves or their beloved university?
Perhaps, JoePa’s widow or children know something; perhaps there is a diary somewhere. Perhaps the Athlete Director or the University President have answers. We simply may not know for many years.
Most importantly, instead of trying to be Penn State’s moral compass, JoePa and the other officials should have reached out to someone with a moral compass, and asked, “We are afraid. Remind us what the right thing to do is?” Perhaps a trusted attorney or priest?
I am sad.
