Does Your System Support This Resolution?
In 4 and a half hours my new year’s resolution will be officially incomplete — unless I finish writing this exact piece you are reading now, of course. Yes, yes, my NYR is to write something, anything, once a day (and maybe even publish it online) just to see if I can. Will I be successful at completing it? Probably not, but I would argue that success shouldn’t be hinged on completion.
I’m probably just saying that because there’s very little chance that I will be successful in keeping my own resolution, and its only the first day! For whatever unexplainable reason I decided that I should write one piece, every day, for the entire year. Theoretically it shouldn’t be too hard — if I’m not particular about the quality of my content!
My ineptitude aside, the point I want to make is about the nature of resolutions. We tend to set the bar unrealistically high but ambition shouldn’t be frowned upon. In fact it’s human nature to strive for the unreasonable. Resolutions are the culturally acceptable manifestation of our innate desire to continually better ourselves. It’s why we don’t live in caves anymore, but it’s also not socially acceptable to break from the crowd for some silly “dreams.”
Before I ramble myself to sleep I should wrap this up so I can keep my promise to myself — at least for 1 day. Don’t be afraid to set a resolution and don’t be afraid to fail it. It’s your destiny! (I think I’ve been watching too much Star Wars lately)
Stay tuned to see what other nonsensical paradigms I come up with to stay “true to myself.” Happy New Year!
