In this series I wanted to challenge the prohibitions that earlier generations of artists placed on photographing strangers without their permission, particularly those from cultures other than the artist’s own. This was a position promoted by figures such as Martha Rosler and Allan Sekula looking critically at the use of photography in anthropology, documentary photography, photojournalism and other practices, and who felt that too often, photographers objectified and exoticised those of ‘other’ cultures. Fully aware of their critique, I used street photography as a medium to produce images that are executed at the same level of abstraction that I had earlier in my practice, which eliminates sensational component from the level of execution.
