WHEN YOUR SEXUAL ASSUALTER HAS A “DIFFERENT RECOLLECTION OF EVENTS”

As the Harvey Weinstein saga continues to unfold, few revelations have been as candid and earnest as the one made by Lupita Nyong’o. Interestingly enough, none of the accounts have been as contested as hers.

Weinstein has remained largely silent as countless white actresses have accused him of misconduct. The moment a black actress levied a claim against your highness though, the response was swift and matter of fact.

Through his PR person, the producer issued the following statement; “Mr. Weinstein has a different recollection of the events, but believes Lupita is a brilliant actress and a major force for the industry. Last year, she sent a personal invitation to Mr. Weinstein to see her in her Broadway show Eclipsed.”

With this passive aggressive, non-denial, black and white feminists alike let out a collective sigh. Weinstein’s response shows that anti-blackness has a place everywhere; even in sexual assault.

Nyong’o is an inspiring actress and amazing humanitarian, one who refused to succumb to the casting couch culture so prevalent in Hollywood. Her doing this in an industry where leading black actresses can be counted on one hand only magnifies the impact.
