Changing Environment
Saturdays have become my rest day — sleep all day. Sundays are used to rant about tomorrow’s gift (Monday).
Last week, everything changed.
As our house helper said, I have been devoting 95% of my life to work. I leave home at around 6:30am and arrive home by 10:00pm if lucky to be able to leave the office early.
Last week, I received a text message from my manager saying, “ready ka na bukas?” (Are you ready for tomorrow?) Immediately, I replied and asked what’s in for me tomorrow. Apparently, the new organizational structure will be announced the next day and it will be a big leap for me. The next morning, yes, it was really a big leap and he wants me to take on the new role immediately.
When I was in college, my bestfriend would always remind me to lessen being an autocrat. We were not on the same thesis group and there were several classes that would entail different groupings. Little did I know that this constant reminder will haunt me until today.
Several months ago, my autocracy has been an issue and I’m slowly trying to resolve it. It will be a big change for me since I have been that way since the world began. It is getting difficult every passing day, every passing minute.
Last week, my officemate backed out in attending a seminar on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I don’t believe in attending seminars because I think that those are just perceptions of people on their point of view but this one’s different. It was for me. It was really for me and it is strucking me everytime our facilitator speaks.
And this will change my Saturdays and Sundays. For all the Saturdays of October, I will be attending this seminar and hopefully, Sundays will be spent planning the whole week — instead of ranting about the next day.
The autocracy issue has been going on for months and I think, I won’t go on relying on the they-should-understand-me-because-that’s-the-way-I-am mantra but this:
When we are no longer able to change a situation — we are challenged to change ourselves. — Viktor Frankl
That’s when I realized I need to change some of my usual routines, not only to help decrease the autocracy, but to also help myself.
