While I appreciate the sentiment, many of the original Web 2.0 services were not sustainable businesses. That’s why many of them are gone today. If those services were really useful, they would have been bought and integrated into other more successful services. It was an experimental, and more importantly pre-smartphone, era and that time has passed.

That the trend is towards the largest of companies is true not only for Internet services, but for business overall today. Public companies are rewarded for growth and thus many companies either buy growth via acquisitions or stock buybacks. The incumbent platforms of today, GOOG, FB, AAPL, AMZN (or BAT- Baidu-Alibaba-Tencent, in China) have and will dominate _because_ they have built moats around their services.
