The new year brings New Years Resolutions and usually a bunch of change. At least it’s usually a good excuse to try something new and create that “new you” compared to the previous year. I’m sure most of this comes from a couple of months at the end of the year and all the bad habits that we form through the year. This is of course why all the gyms fill up after the new year. Everyone decides this is the year they are going to start to eat better and work out.

After taking some time to examine my daily habits and correlation of my thoughts (good and bad) and feelings (excited and envious), I’m just not pleased with social media’s effects on my daily life. On average I’ve spent 12 hours a week on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. This is over 2 full days a month dedicating my time to swiping up, liking, commenting, watching, and reading. …

As I usher out 2018 and usher in 2019 I just like to write about all the highlights of the previous year for posterities sake. It went by fast and with so much happening it’s sometimes hard to remember everything. I’d really like to better capture everything in numbers next year, maybe that will be my new year resolution. This year it all started with the number 40.

Personally

We have now been in Texas for 2 years and it’s gone by so fast. We’ve added:

  • 1 Livestock Guardian Dog
  • 2 Sheep
  • 3 Pigs
  • 5 Turkeys
  • 1 Big Reeeed Tractor
  • 1 Dodge…

The Samsung FlexDry DVE60M9900

I never thought that drying clothes could be fun and interesting until I received the Samsung FlexDry! It takes doing the laundry to a whole nother level. We live on a small farm with donkeys, goats, chickens, sheep, and three dogs so we’re always doing loads of laundry from dirty overalls, sheets, and general clothes. We’ve had a 5-year-old dryer that was lousy. It would drive us crazy as clothes would hardly come out dry and you had to cycle them multiple times, it was such a waste of time and money. …

I’ve been on the both sides of the spectrum from leading engineer teams being forced to make the hard decision of quick fix or hack to meet a deadline. Causing the accumulation of technical debt.

More recently I’ve been focused on the product and features, pushing the engineering team to make the difficult decision to create tech debt. I happened on this video today by Poornima Vijayashanker and Jay Hum of Pivotal Tracker that explains it all pretty well and a great intro to how to deal with all the tech debt we accumulate. …

Ocean Beach, Dog Beach.

We really enjoyed 6 years in San Diego, but over time we saw a lot of bad changes in the great neighborhood we lived in. We weren’t very excited about the state of the state, plus it was about time for us to set down roots. We had always talked about having chickens and how great it would be to have some land to stretch out on and after some talk, we decided we should try something new. Before moving to San Diego we were actually going to move to Austin, TX. …

Unboxing the Samsung POWERBOT R7040

First impressions, the box is fairly standard electronic/appliance type of packaging with some dense plastic air wrap around each part. It is definitely packed tightly and would be hard to damage in shipping and nothing very fancy. The quickstart guide is great and is easy to comprehend and the setup is a breeze. Plug the charger in, remove the plastic, turn the vacuum on and place it on the charger. The display is fairly straightforward and it lets you know how much charge the battery has, the activity of charging, wifi connected, and when it’s full.

I’ve been very busy over the past two months, more to come on that but let’s just say I’m now a Texan! I’m not one to push products but when I really have a great experience and love a product I do like to let people know when there is a no brainer time to get something great at an unbelievable price.

Currently you can get the the same First Tactical bag I posted about for 50% off. Go to FirstTactical.com and enter promo code: FTBAGS to get 50% off their bags till Nov 24!

I love this bag and with this months sale considering picking up another bag or two! I’ve been using it for the last 2 months during which I’ve taken a couple of trips with it and it’s been my daily carry bag to the office. It’s got plenty of room for everything I need, top quality and held up nicely. …

Everyday Carry (EDC) is a thing. Imagine my surprise when I learned that there are many communities around this subject matter. Here I thought I was alone in my obsession for bags and carrying everything I need each day.

Since cycling into work a lot less I’ve been in the need of something to use as my every day carry bag that isn’t a Thule Pannier. Don’t get me wrong I love my pannier bags but they aren’t practical for walking around, holding two bags can be pretty tiresome. Just using the one bag doesn’t provide enough space for all I want to carry. …

I got off the plane and headed down to the rental car shuttle pickup outside of Dallas Love Field. Opened my phone and clicked on the SilverCar app and clicked on the button for a pickup. It gave me the choice of a text or a call so I sent the automated text which then brought a driver pulling up a few minutes later in a nice new silver Audi A4. He helped us with our bag and started to drive us over to their facility. As he did he gave me a quick explanation of all the cars controls and by the time he was done, we were there. Next, he verified my Drivers License and Credit Card and we scanned the cars QR code and we were off. …

Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor, TX a must for any BBQ Fan.

What’s it like to plan your entire vacation with your iPhone? It’s amazingly disruptive and convenient.

It’s been a while for a real vacation so Leslie and I decided it would be fun to take some time off and travel to Texas. Instead of the traditional hotel and rental car companies, we decided to try something new do everything via mobile apps and the sharing economy. Our goal was to live more like a local and see the state so we used AirBnB and tried SilverCar.

Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX

This trip was our first time ever using the AirBnB App. Love the concept but never had the opportunity to try it out. This was the perfect trip to use AirBnB since we hit up 5 cities in 6 days and check out the non-touristy areas. It allowed us to stay locally in pretty interesting areas. I’ll post about each city in our week long journey through Texas stopping in Dallas, Waco, Austin, San Antonio, and Houston. …
