A DESIGNER AT THE FILEMAKER DEVCON

MY EXPERIENCE

For the second year in a row, the conference took place in Las Vegas at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Having never set foot in Vegas, I was able to visit this brightly coloured, stimulating city that so many people were talking about. What a great time I had, both personally and professionally!

FIRST OFF, THE CONFERENCE

Being a UI/UX designer myself, I expected to be inspired and motivated to kick our interfaces up a notch and offer our clients a user-experience that lives up to our reputation. Since I am in charge of this mission, it’s important for me to be on the lookout for new features and methods.

I attended around ten sessions that dealt on subjects ranging from the future of the FileMaker platform, WebDirect, structuring interfaces, developing mobile applications, “Best Practices”, user experience, among many others. In each session, I took notes so I could implement effectively what I learned after I returned to Montreal.

THURSDAY WAS DEFINITELY THE HIGHLIGHT :

THE “MASTER” : MATT PETROWSKI

  • What a conference speaker ! He bombarded us with ideas. I never got bored during the time he spent exposing all the different ways we could manipulate the tools offered by the platform, all the while giving us well thought-out tips and tricks. I spent the entire session asking myself : “Now why didn’t I think of that sooner !” I was starstruck.

THE “ARTIST” : YANN LIQUEUR-SALZÉDO

  • Time after time, he showed us interfaces that seemed to transcend what we thought was possible with FileMaker. He kept on pushing the platform’s limits even further, even giving us a preview of what was coming up next year. I can’t wait to see the finished result.

USER EXPERIENCE VS USER FRIENDLY : JORDAN WATSON

  • This was the first time I saw him, and frankly I loved it. He presented us with ease the two faces of this design coin, which are often challenging for professionals in my line of work. He opened my eyes on several key points and gave me solid arguments to defend my decisions in our applications. Thank you Jordan !

WINNING A PRIZE

As Marie said in her article, Casserole Nova, which will be released this fall, won the “Innovation” prize ; a great gesture of recognition from FileMaker. My involvement was apparent in the application’s interface and user experience. I am proud of this great accomplishment, and for working with such a talented team.

AND NOW… VEGAS !

I had heard and seen so much in movies about this mysterious world that is Las Vegas. Personally, this was an experience that I absolutely had to have at least once in my life. I probably beat the record of my kids saying “THIS IS CRAZY !” while I told them about my trip. Even as we were landing and I was in the plane, I saw the city in all it’s glory from above as it put on a dazzling show of lights at night : Wow ! We visited the famous Caesars Palace, drank a lot of cocktails, attended a great show, “Le reve”, and had all sorts of other “bling bling” experiences. I am fulfilled !

The upcoming year looks promising for the gang at Fin Finaud. With all this new inspiration and motivation absorbed during this wonderful week, I can’t wait to bolster our projects with the things I learned and share the knowledge with my colleagues. After all, there’s nothing better than seeing your app make your clients’ lives easier by boosting their productivity.

See you next time… DevCon 😉
