“We” will not be surviving anything. First let’s acknowledge this is a completely abstract thought experiment. One billion years ago there weren't even vertebrates on the planet. To think there will be any kind of creature vaguely resembling humans over such a long time frame is just infantile escapism. Everything dies: individuals, species, planets, solar systems, let’s grow up and get over it. There will be many extinction events in the future: ice ages, GRBs, CMEs, rogue planets, black holes, supernovas, super volcanoes, etc. The earth will not be habitable well before the mean temp. reaches the boiling point of water and certainly well before a billion years. There’s no running away from out primary responsibility which is cleaning up the mess we've created here and stop trying to infect the rest of the universe with our dysfunctional species.
