Just as concerning, surely, should be that people are moving money to these businesses. What does that say about individuals’ values, priorities and ethics? Or are these stock movements being controlled mainly by automated algorithms? In which case, they are presumably written to react in complex but predictable ways to news feeds; e.g. Trump + policies + election win = move money to stocks favoured by those policies. And this then calls into question the ethics of people who write the algorithms. But still and also, I would argue, the values and priorities of people in the street. “Nevermind the world outside my neighbourhood, just as long as I get a wage increase, and America is great (again).” Perfectly understandable, readily rationalised, but driven by a system that values personal financial gain above almost everything else.
