Science of the Discworld II, by Terry Pratchett, Jack Cohen, and Ian Stewart focuses on the same topic. And although there is a fair amount of hard science in it, it’s far from dry. It helps to like the Discworld books to get into it, and it helps to know your Shakespeare in order to recognise a lot of the references, but it is about the fact that humans wouldn’t be humans without our ability to see the world in terms of stories.

In fact, they make the case that we don’t qualify for the name Homo Sapiens Sapiens, we should be Pan Narrans; the story telling chimpanzee.
