The power tools issue highlights why this question is a difficult one, certainly from the designer’s point of view. Do they design a product that is under-optimised for the majority of people who would currently use it, in the hope that they would expand their potential audience? Or do they play safe and do what they know will sell? From a marketing point of view that’s like releasing a book in Elfish in the hope it will encourage more people to learn it.
If you want a company to make a product that fits the needs of someone who falls outside the traditional demographic, you have to convince them that someone will buy it.
Yes, it may a problem caused by the economics of a blindly prejudiced society, but to truly resolve it you need to have enough people put their money where their good intentions are to get the attention of those who risk their own capital to put those products onto the shelves.
