Very good read. As a veteran with multiple deployments to the Middle East and over eight years of service, I do not remember once equating the flag and the anthem with the military. They are clearly associated with the military, but more as a symbol of what the military serves and represents, not the other way around.

While I’m not as sympathetic to Kaepernick as many are, I’ve never taken offense to him or any other athlete protesting by sitting or kneeling during the anthem, and I do not believe that his activism should be keeping him from an NFL roster. However, I also think that we need to know his salary demands before we can fully pass judgement on the NFL and its franchises in this specific case.
