As another commentator astutely noticed, information asymmetry is another form of power asymmetry and healthcare is filled with these moments throughout a patient journey.
When a healthcare project is doggedly pursuing ‘patient-centeredness’ without considering the power dynamics in a patient and provider relationship, sustained behavior can be stubbornly hard to achieve. Unfortunately, ‘patient readiness’ might be blamed, when in fact power asymmetry in the relationship (hidden in plain view) might not allow change to happen in the first place.
