Most of the sources I came across suggest the collage figures were in fact admired by the Beatles — certainly Bob Dylan, Stu Sutcliffe, Terry Southern, and some of the Indian holy men were picked because of the group’s appreciation for them. I doubt they were devoted fans of Mae West, Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, and certainly not Aleister Crowley, but within the relatively short period they had to design and make the Sgt. Pepper cover, I think the Beatles had generally favorable (if vague) views of those individuals.
