Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s talk about how a balanced and nutritious diet can improve your mental health. First off, we’re not going to say that a balanced diet is the be all, end all for mental illness, or that it’s the missing piece that will cure it. No, a nutritious diet isn’t going to have the same effect as an antidepressant, or counseling, but it will have a significant impact on improving mental health as will exercise.

Think of it this way, they’re both just alternative ways to get to the same destination but they can also be built on upon each other to effectively manage mental illnesses.

Exercise and the Outdoors

It goes to say not everyone will have certain resources available to help them, but most people do control what goes in their mouth and what to do in their spare time. Exercise has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression, especially exercising in nature. So, when you’re having a bad week, and everything is heavy and slow, if you can just drag yourself outside for even a little bit on a bright sunny day and just walk, it will feel a lot better and it will get a lot easier. So, if you have a local gym or track or hiking area nearby, find a way to incorporate that into your daily routine.

George Bolzoni wants you to know you’re not alone. And if you need someone to hold you accountable to give you a reason to get out of bed and move, his services are available for everyone in the New York Area.

Nutrition and Diet

Like exercise, nutrition can vastly improve mental health. One of the key traits of depression is lack of motivation and energy. One benefit of having a nutritious diet is that you’ll have energy to burn. And a nutrition expert like George Bolzoni can help make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need.

According to the UK Mental Health Foundation, “Those who report some level of mental health problem also eat fewer healthy foods (fresh fruit and vegetables, organic foods and meals made from scratch) and more unhealthy foods (chips and crisps, chocolate, ready meals and takeaways).” They also state, “A balanced mood and feelings of wellbeing can be protected by ensuring that our diet provides adequate amounts of complex carbohydrates, essential fats, amino acids, vitamins and minerals and water.”

Just think about it, a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. Having a fit body leads to confidence which leads to less anxiety. Less anxiety leads to making life just a little bit easier, which would lead to less regret, less self-hatred, and hopefully less depression.
