A wonderful romp (as usual from Nassim!) The idea that rationality is measured by survival is a useful one, and consistent with the grand scheme of evolutionary progression — — that which has led to human biological development and cultural thriving is de facto rational. But hitching that wagon to “revealed preferences” and emotionally or culturally motivated beliefs fails to recognize the role of wisdom in balancing empirical information and intuitive motivations, and the critical role of empathy. Great minds and great souls have added much to human progress.

Empirical knowledge (science) needs to be guided by actionable beliefs (faith). Both need to be tested by experience (do they work?) and by reason (are they consistent?). In my view, empirical knowledge may be the engine that drives human progress, but our survival will require that the tip of the spear be armed with our highest empathic moptivations, in a word, with love.
