Ask Ethan: How close are we to a Theory of Everything?

Ethan — a very nice review, thank you. You did not mention that Stephen Hawking has given up on the TOE — “there is no theory-independent reality.” I have a more fundamental observation. The universe, consciousness, physics, biology, math, logic — — all embody recursive (reflective) qualities. As a consequence, they are all subject to the paradox, as Godel proved, that they cannot be both consistent and complete. The unknowable is a fact of life — ultimately wonderful and mysterious.

“The Hole at the Center of Creation”, my 2015 FQXi Essay, provides a more detailed discussion, and is available as a free publication on spiral inquiry.org.
