Are you using “conservatism” in the sense of our current red/blue liberal/conservative political sense? If so, this makes less sense to me. I live in a deep blue state. My assessment from many of my neighbors and friends — most of whom would brand themselves as progressives — is that they are often strongly in favor of zoning to “preserve the character of the neighborhood”. They also often serve on historical commissions.
From what I read, some of the chief problems with our cities becoming unaffordable are that zoning restrictions are limiting the growth of affordable housing and therefore making these cities unaffordable. This is happening in such progressive cities as San Francisco and Los Angeles.
So is the NIMBY/YIMBY spectrum on a different axis than the typical left/right liberal/conservative axis?
