Sarmale made by my sister in law

Sarmale, a cherished dish in Romanian cuisine, is a celebration of tradition and flavor. These cabbage rolls, stuffed with a savory mixture of minced meat, rice, and spices, are a labor of love that yields unparalleled satisfaction. Ingredients: 1 large head of cabbage 500g minced pork or beef 1 cup rice 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon dried thyme Salt and pepper to taste 500ml chicken or vegetable broth Sour cream for serving

Preparation: Core the cabbage and carefully separate the leaves. Blanch them in boiling water for a few minutes until softened. Remove and set aside to cool. In a bowl, mix together the minced meat, rice, onion, garlic, tomato paste, paprika, thyme, salt, and pepper. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll tightly, tucking in the sides as you go. Arrange the cabbage rolls in a large pot in layers. Pour the broth over the rolls, ensuring they are fully submerged. Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 1–1.5 hours until the rice and meat are cooked through. Serve the sarmale hot, accompanied by a dollop of sour cream on top.

Presentation: Arrange the sarmale on a platter, garnished with fresh herbs like parsley or dill. Serve alongside crusty bread and a side of pickles for a complete meal.
