US-Russia relations are at an all-time low and there has been unending talk of new sanctions against Russia this year. Wasn’t it Donald Trump who in late October 2018 told a crowd of supporters at a rally in North Carolina that “the worst thing that ever happened to Russia is when I won the election”? The Mueller probe is reportedly drawing to a close and Moscow may soon face new accusations of meddling in US politics. More importantly, the Democrats have been in control of the lower chamber of Congress since January 2019. All this to suggest that there could be new, tougher Russia sanctions just around the corner. I have built this case study around a group of charming characters and their multi-billion-dollar possessions so that our journey to the land of samovars and matryoshka dolls will also take us to Cyprus, the BVI and the Isle of Man.
