Discover the Various Phases of Neck Pain

Muscle aches. Aching or sore muscles in the neck and shoulder may occur in response to excessive exercise or prolonged physical or emotional stress. The neck muscles, sometimes called trigger points, can develop hard knots that are tender to the touch.
A muscle spasm. This is a rapid, potent tightening of muscles in the neck. Your neck may hurt and feel tight or knotted and turning your head might not be possible. If you wake up with a sore, rigid neck it is probably a spasm of the muscle. Muscle spasm may be caused by muscle damage, but it may also occur in response to a spinal disc or nerve problem or even emotional stress.
Headache — In the back of the head and upper neck, neck-related pain is most often felt and is typically the result of muscle tension or spasm. Neck-related headache pain is generally dull or unpleasant, rather than sharp; the neck may be stiff or tender, too. It makes the neck work harder.
The pressure to the nerves. Irritation or pinching of the spinal nerve roots can cause pain that can be acute, intermittent, intense, or followed by pins and needles. The pain can travel down the arm, or even into the hand, depending on the nerve involved.
