Women are constantly scrutinised. They are endlessly judged on their appearance, their voices, their age, their behaviour, their attitude, marital status, whether they have children, how they raise their children, how they make other people feel, how other people behave in their presence — and that’s just for starters.

Not one of the billions of women across the world will cut the mustard. Because a) nobody ever does b) the more you look for flaws, the more you’ll find them and c) the standards against which women are judged are biased and hypocritical. So women can’t win, basically. Which is the whole point — the constant, carping scrutiny is a useful social tool for a sexist society. With women always being found lacking in some way or another, it gives society a great excuse to police them, restrict them and tell them what to do at every opportunity.

Men aren’t scrutinised and judged to the same degree, ergo are not found wanting. So, therefore, they must be better at doing things! So the logic goes.

This is where feminism steps in. Feminism has also scrutinised every area of women’s behaviour, choices and feelings but with respect and understanding of what motivates them. Rather than putting a negative slant on…
