No Human Being is Illegal

by Gerald D. Givens Jr.

I agree with President Obama on DACA 100%. This is not about legality, this is about our nation’s morality. Today, Trump was wrong to rescind DACA; the President didn’t have to do it. This is political.

America went through this with my ancestors in the 1800's. The US Supreme Court found that imported Africans, the Negro, Black race had no rights of American citizenship because we were “imports” in the Dred Scott decision. Dred Scott sued

“They had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations; and so far inferior, that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the Negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit.” -Chief Justice Roger Taney

It required more than a Civil War, three US Constitutional Admendments, a myriad pieces of legislation and 100 years of fighting back, resulting in me being the first in my family to be born with full American citizenship rights. Making my children only the second generation of African-Americans to be born with full citizenship rights. A lot of the DREAMERS, impacted by DACA are the same age as my children.

Understand that there were African-American kids then, just like there are multi-cultural and multi-ethnic kids now under the same circumstances with DACA being rescinded.

Voter suppression. Charleston. Sheriff Apriao. DACA. There is a lot going on around the issue of race in America. Don’t wait to get involved until it knocks on your front door personally. By then it might be too late.

Get involved and put the pressure on the US Congress. Hold every single elected official accountable.
