Let your Life leads your Career

(and not the other way around)

In the age of 30, I’ve been in the workforce for almost 10 years. Be it as an monkey-intern, a geek- engineer, or a multi-tasker-manager. It’s been an amazing ride, and couldn’t wait where life would lead me in the future to come.

I’ve learned that, yes, there are times that one needs to be proactive in deciding a career path. But most of the times, at least in my experience, life (or a greater power above, GOD to be exact) may choose otherwise. Having lost the USA H1B lottery twice, having uncertainties of relocation requests, and other disappointments in career path where I’ve intervened much, I’ve come to a realization that your career should not lead your life.

Here are 5 things that I suggest you can do:

1. Don’t haphazardly apply for jobs

Instead, keep your eyes & ears open for the opportunities, and yes, let them headhunters approach you. Don’t be afraid of being approached, and say yes for every interviews opportunity.

2. Seize every interviews

Go to every single one of them not for the purpose of getting the job, but for the purpose of getting to know other businesses/companies’ visions & missions. You will enrich your knowledge and increase your network.

3. Ask yourself that clichè question: “Where do I see myself 1 year, and 5 years from now?”

If the answer to that question doesn’t resonate with your current career responsibilities, then start absorbing the different aspects in your life that may lead you elsewhere.

4. Ask the question #3 again, but put your family (wife, husband, children, parents) in picture

Always remember that life consists of the people surrounding us, and those immediate people, are your family. Go through your life with your family.

5. Take action

Just do it. Now.
