That works if all you produce is text. For in-depth stories, investigative stories, longform stories, however—guess what? They don’t work in templates. In fact, they die in templates.

So very true! When I worked at the Dayton Daily News, there was constant pressure to fit everything I worked in into DT, which was the CMS/pagination system at the time. The end result of that was the template design shaped the story, not the story shaping the design.

I knew how to use DT; it wasn’t hard and I did a few pages there, but most of the work was done in design tools that understand grid and stylesheets are way more than rigid templates created by engineers, not designers.
