There are the folks who have zero code debt, are using all the best practices, and have airtight hiring processes.

And then there are the folks running their entire businesses out of an overworked Google Spreadsheet, with a hacked together stack that was meant to be a prototype.

Doing things the ‘right way’ doesn’t mean you won’t win. But it does mean you’ll be spending time on things might not end up mattering. Premature optimization means every step will be slower, and in startups, speed equals life.

On the frontier, the pragmatists win. So work on only things that matter, and kick everything else down the road.
