My Overview of UGEARS’ new Hexapod Explorer Kit

This is a newer kit from UGEARS with only 388pcs, and sells for $56.99 at www.ugearsmodels.com.

In this article I’m going to show an overview of the kit, my finished model and some videos of it in action. Future articles will deal with the inner workings and I already wrote one on how all 6 legs move in tandem here:

Kit Overview:

This kit is a LARGE departure for UGEARS because it has NO tooth picks and is primarily powered by a large spring.

The first kit powered by a spring instead of rubber bands
  • This kit comes with the same standard sandpaper and wax. The unusually components are two different size rubber bands and springs. The single large spring is what provides drive for the crawler.
Here are all the pieces and parts that come with this kit.

My Finished Build:

I decided to color the chassis black and the legs with metallic Sharpies to try and make it appear more metal than wood.

Slow Speed:

Fast Speed:

Overwound Fast Speed:

As you can see in fast speed and overwound fast speed the model has a tendency to turn right. I was never able to sort this problem out but I suspect that is the same direction of the spring and this is what’s causing the rotation of the model.

CURRENT BUILD

Currently, I’m building two U-Gears Dream Cabriolet VM-05 simultaneously two different ways. The model is essentially a ’58 Caddy convertible but it has been adjusted just enough so GM doesn’t get mad.

  1. The first one is going to be pink with gold wheels and leopard print interior aka a pimp-mobile. The actual build, apart from being customized with some glue on bling and painted will be pretty much box stock from the kit. Only the doors are complete and I did putty and sand them so that the individual wooden pieces are no longer visible.
  2. The second will be red with a red and white interior that I am trying to finish it to a higher standard by filling in all the gaps between the pieces of wood on the body and contours. Also, I have made this build even more challenging by trying to add in details and reshape parts to look like, or at least more closely resemble an actual ’58 Caddy.

I don’t know if I’m going to make a build thread on this site or not, but I try to post updates on my Instagram story every few days. I would say that I’m roughly 60% complete with the builds and have another 3 months or more until completion. Here’s my Instagram for anyone that would like to follow along. https://www.instagram.com/gertman2000/
