Personally, I disagree that Turkey is somehow different. Over the last 10 years Erdogan has been on a very deliberate path towards dictatorship. Through populism, a cult of personality, and aggressive supression of the media (and opposition in general), he has acquired more and more power. It looks like the recent failed coup has given him what he needs to complete the job. So sad for Turkey.
