I know where this viewpoint comes from, and as a commercial designer/marketing person, I totally get the sentiment, however, it’s never seemed like a realistic thing to insist on. It’s not always teachable, and not all artists are wired to think this way. Some just need to make art. Some think the way Bowie did — as a total package. My only response however would be “your music better be pretty damn great to rise above all on it’s own.
