Do what you hate first.

The ability to prioritize is a key success factor when developing a project. I’d like to talk here about the team management of my startup, that’s what I know best.

We are currently a team of 4 : 3 founders, living in Paris and Bangkok, and a friend helping us with design. We have very different backgrounds : developer, marketer, engineer, designer. As a result we all think very different and mostly work at remote places. We do have 100 ideas a day, but we often struggle to get shit done.

Prioritizing and staying focus is what matters when you develop a product. Warren Buffett’s method told by James Clear is a great example on how to do it.

Here’s another way :

  • Users’ first : when you talk about features and marketing actions, rate them from 1 to 5 (1 being “people won’t care if we don’t have this feature” and 5 being “people will never use again my my product if we don’t have this feature”). Create your first shortlist here. Forget the rest.
  • Do what you hate first : rate from 1 to 5 every item on this very shortlist (1 being what you love most, 5 being what you hate most).
  • If you end up mostly with features that your users want and that you hate developing, it’s totally normal ! Start killing every item rated 9 or more. That’s your one and only goal for the period you have. If it’s a period day, do what you hate in the morning. You’ll be more effective in the evening !

Cheers,

Thomas
