When was this not true? Isn’t that how ad-supported content mediums — television, radio, magazines, newspapers, etc have operated for decades? Isn’t this just a case of having better tools to accomplish the goal? More data? Less friction between publisher and user/reader/customer/consumer? (Pick your least objectionable phrase)
