I don’t know whether I brought her joy, but I know I amused her and I know that she recognized when she and I both were amused by the same thing. Like when she’d stop by the house and my Mom would get to talking and Sarah would very secretively reach up and shut her hearing aid off and steal a look at me and her eye would sparkle.

She appreciated young people. And anyone who was interested in reading and speaking their minds. She taught me to value that so if, by listening, that brought her joy, well, so be it. She returned the gift to me tenfold.
