Goals scored by goalkeepers are somewhat rare events in football. They spend greater part of a match in the penalty area of their own team, a marked area around the goal they are defending in which they can handle the ball to defend their goal.

It is highly unusual for a goalkeeper to move far beyond this area and join an attack, as this leaves the defense vulnerable to long-distance attempts until he/she can return to defend it.

Most goals scored by goalkeepers come from penalties and free kicks sometimes when the goalkeeper joins the attack on the set-piece when time is not in their hands and they need an equalizer or a goal to get maximum points. Let’s have a look at the list of goalkeepers with the most goals in their soccer career.

To put that in some context Emile Heskey, an actual striker, scored 13 during the same period.

Chilavert scored 10 goals in 35 games for Velez during the 1997/98 season which for any position would be impressive, but for a goalkeeper is truly beyond one’s imagination.
