Should designers listen?

Lessons from the front lines.

I’ve been the primary designer for our product for almost a year and half now. Before designing a software product for multiple platforms, I worked at a couple agencies, designing ads, websites, etc. One of the few lessons I learned after joining the team at Robin is to listen. A lot of designers ride a high horse of pride, and I’ve been guilty on many accounts. We do so to the point of being stubbornly wrong.

I’ve fought hard for things that I thought were perfectly designed but made the user experience dreadful. I’m here to just give a small warning that designers should lead every conversation and product decision with their ears first.

Listen to those around you; your users, your team members, and your developers, before inserting your own opinionated view.

The old adage “the customer is always right” has a hint of truth in it. Listen to customer feedback and take it into account amongst the grand scheme of your product. At the very least, you will have that much more perspective moving forward.

I’d love for this to morph into a bigger conversation and I am more than happy to talk more about the many facets of a designer’s life. Hit me up on Twitter or here.
