7-point safety checklist for your custom home

When you move into your custom home, the joy and merriment know no bounds! But there are certain aspects that you need to take care of, when moving into a new home, for the safety of your family. There are several things that might go wrong and hurt your family or harm the house. Having these safety measures would certainly help you in the long run.

Let us now check out the seven most essential items that protect your home and your loved ones from harm –

  1. Fire extinguisher

This is one item in the home safety list that you can never skip off. This can practically solve a lot of small scale fire hazards such as kitchen fires. After you build a home, make sure to stock these fire extinguishers in the kitchen and additional ones on corridors — so that if a fire breaks out it can be handled easily and extinguished without much of damage to your loved ones and property.

  1. First aid kit

This is a vital part of the safety manual, as someone or the other could get a cut or a bruise while working or the children might fall while playing and hurt themselves. When you have kids around, packs of band-aids along with antiseptic creams, over-the-counter drugs for common cold, pain killer sprays and balms, sprain relievers are an absolute must haves. Make sure that these are stored in a safe place away from light and heat and away from easy access to children. Knife cuts, infection wounds and sprains can be well taken care of with such a kit.

  1. Updated contact list (doctors, parents, fire brigade, ambulance)

Your family’s safety is in your hands and updated information in the contact list can save you from lot of problems at the moment of crisis. Have the phone numbers of babysitters, doctors, emergency contacts such as family and friends to be contacted and also basic information regarding health insurances — so that even in your absence, other members can access the information at ease.

  1. Smoke alarms

Install good quality smoke alarms that go off when a slight fume is detected, it would save your new house and you from fire hazards. The sensors ought to be powerful enough to catch smoke and alert you.

  1. Dead bolt locks on outside doors

Whether you are at home or outside, installing dead bolt locks to the main door would be a great idea! They are way better than normal locks, as they physically bolt the door in an interlocking pattern which is hard to be broken by force.

  1. Disaster kit

And, while we reach the bottom of the list, there are some very crucial things that you can’t skip to maintain the safety of your home. Building a home is important, but keeping it secure is another arena altogether. You could never know when natural calamities such as earthquakes, hurricanes, power-failure due to heavy rains might occur and you might run out of food and potable water. You can stock the food in plastic bags in a garage or closet, but the biggest storage issue remains with water. You could consider the following to manage difficult times -

  • Water — 3 day supply of 3 to 4 liters of water per person per day
  • Food — Non-perishable food items for 3 days
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Solar charger or extra battery for cell phone
  • Candles and safety matches
  • Whistles to alert
  • Insect repellant creams or lotions
  • Radio to tune into weather reports, with batteries
  • Copies of vital documents, ID proofs
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Can opener
  • Pet food and extra food (if you have pets)
  • Couple of sleeping bags
  • Extra cash
  • Knife and scissors
  1. Child-proofing the home

Make sure that there are no sharp-edged furniture or surfaces which might accidentally hurt the little ones. They might crawl, jump or run around the house and it should be well managed to prevent accidental harms, although they tend to fall and bruise often.

Summary: Although we invest on numerous gadgets that can update us about the world around us, it is crucial to invest on and install things that would help us during crisis and natural calamities such as power failure, earthquake and heavy rains.
