Keesa Schreane, host and executive producer of the You’ve Been Served podcast, speaks to the crowd at a rally organized by Girls Who Code in celebration of its first-ever book release on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017. “Whenever there is an attempt to ignore your voice, reclaim your time,” she told the crowd assembled in Union Square, paraphrasing U.S. Representative (D-CA) Maxine Waters.
Girls Who Code intern Kelly Lozo (left), 21, chats with her co-organizers after the rally. The event culminated in a book signing with Girls Who Code Founder and CEO Reshma Saujani.
Kathy Rutherford, 56, who attended the rally, earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering in 1983. Since her retirement two years ago, she‘s dedicated her time to mentoring high schoolers in robotics. When asked to describe what it was like entering such a male-dominated field in the ‘80s, she replied, “Lonely.”
