the case for lowercase

podcasts have become quite a staple in my commute, and since i live in a part of dubai where everything is around 25 minutes away, i love how podcasts often give me pause to reflect on stuff that goes on in my life.

today, i was listening to shelly evenson’s interview by brenden jarvis on brave ux, and they lightheartedly and briefly touched on the topic of the use of lowercase, and this gave me pause for thought — why am i more comfortable using lowercase?

i’m a design strategist and looking through years of work around ux and ui, my tendency to run with lowercase is when i want to create a space of comfort and vulnerability. i use it often in casual conversations, and not at all in formal or work-related communications. i’m a bit of a stickler for “good english”, so lowercase should rankle me some, but it doesn’t oddly enough.

there’ve also been times where my use of lowercase in design is used to convey a differentiation —” we’re contemporary, modern, and we play by our set of rules. come join us”

when do you use lowercase in your communications, and why? or why not?
